19TH STREET DAM REPLACEMENT PROJECT*
Description As the past lead landscape architect for the firm of Fernandez, Frazer, White and Associates. Albert Fernandez Jr., ASLA assisted in developing the preliminary design report for the 19th Street Dam Replacement Project. The scope of this project included the development of a landscape planting plan, the removal of a below grade pedestrian crossing at 19th Street and the development of a new crossing at street level. Also included are new trails that provide linkages, ADA accessibility renovation of area lighting. The trails that were placed on both sides of 19th Street along Apache Creek and in Elmendorf Park along the lakes bank are to link other more developed areas of the park. Project also involved presentation of design to neighborhood groups & associated boards & agency's.
ARROYO VISTA.
San Antonio, Texas. Owner's Representative: Brandon Ross, Special Projects Coordinator. CoSA Neighborhood Action Department (210) 207-5463. As part of the Affordable Showcase of Homes design team, C.F. Zavala Group was the lead designer in developing feasibility studies and designing the final street layout for the eight-acre subdivision located in southwest San Antonio. Site amenities included passive open space, a pedestrian trail connecting to the City's future greenway system and a community playground. Construction is planned for late 2004.
ADMIRAL BOORDA CENTER*
Children's Association for Maximum Potential (C.A.M.P.). The project is located at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas and was developed for The Children's ssociation for Maximum Potential. Landscape Architecture & Site Planning services were provided. The project consisted of a multiple-use childcare center of which the primary function is to house and provide a permanent facility for the Children's Association for maximum Potential (C.A.M.P.) The Center will accommodate 48 children with special needs. The scope of services was the development for the design of the landscaping and outdoor play areas including play equipment. Two separate fenced playground areas are provided for the different age groups accommodated in the facility. In-ground irrigation system and attractive low water and low-maintenance landscaping provided as well. The cost of construction for the portion of work scope was $230,000. The project was complete in 1998. This project was completed with a prior firm.
BEAUMONT GOLF COURSE DEVELOPMENT*
Beaumont, TX. Client: Private Developer. Prime Consultant: Dohn LaBiche, LaBiche Architectural Group. Description: Assisted the prime consultant in planning this 200-acre golf course community. Scope included creating multi-residential community of town homes, garden/patio homes, single-family homes and support retail land-uses.
BLANCO ROAD RELOCAITON PROJECT
San, Antonio, TX. Description: provided landscape planting and hardscape design. The community was very involved in the direction to carry enhancements and CFZ was provided this input as a point of departure for developing concept plans for streetscape. Concept plans included paving treatments, lighting, roundabout treatment, potential for art in the landscape and identifying opportunities for planting trees shrubs and groundcover.
BOEING AEROSPACE RECREATION FACILITY*
Huntsville, AL. Client: Goodrum Knowles Architects. Description: Development of a strategic master plan identifying future adult recreational needs for the manufacturing plant for the Huntsville facility. The scope of services included: site analysis, preparation of architectural/ landscape architectural concept, site lighting standards, utility requirements, for multi-use recreation center, tennis courts, softball fields, basketball courts, fishing pier and wetlands mitigation, phasing plan, and cost estimates.
CENTRAL PARK DEVELOPMENT*
This project was a 120-acre multi-use development, which included commercial, retail, and residential parcels. The scope of the project for POD, Inc. was the development of landscape guidelines for the complex, planted boulevards, lake and stream features, placement of tennis courts, swimming pools, spas, and a site jogging path. The project construction was phased with the commercial/retail parcels developed first. Construction drawings were developed to include hardscape layout, grading, drainage, landscape, and irrigation items. Bidding and construction of the first phase followed.
CHERYL WEST AND TEURAH SHALEY APARTMENTS PLAYGROUNDS*
San Antonio, Texas. This project encompassed the replacement of existing playgrounds for the San Antonio Housing Authority. New playgrounds were installed to meet current playground guidelines and ADA requirements. Playgrounds and equipment were designed for 2-5 year and 5-12 year age groups. Playgrounds included half-court basketball court with ornamental steel fencing, swing sets, covered seating area, play structures, drinking fountains, benches, vinyl coated fencing and ANSL lighting. Other construction items included demolition of existing concrete walls and walks, grading, and landscaping. Construction costs were $386,225 and was completed in 2001.
CHEVAL PLANNED DEVELOPMENT
Huntsville, AL. Client: Goodrum Knowles Architect. Description: A 12-acre estate converted into a single-family development. The Homestead, its swimming pool and indoor recreation area was restored, and converted into the community's recreation amenity. Manmade ponds along the western edge of the community provide passive recreational uses while functions as on-site detention. A trail system ties the community together and pedestrian access to all the community's recreational amenities.
CONINE RESIDENCE
San Antonio, TX. The landscape architects developed a softscape landscape plan with a planting plan using a wide variety of predominantly native with some exotic drought tolerant plant materials to help enhance the beauty of the site and to recapture the feeling of the hill country. The site from front to back rises forty feet and a hardscape plan was developed utilizing retaining walls to help minimize the slope and allow for the placement of a pool with waterfall, cabana, and spa. Unique design features include, a scenic overlook terrace, a water fall into the swimming pool below the cabana, a sweeping staircase up to the top of the scenic overlook, large boulder embankments as well as stone and stucco clad raised planters and fencing, and a bridge from the master suite to the Jacuzzi and cabana level. There were many features that the client desired and it was our job to place them on the site so that they were not overwhelming. The clients wanted a self contained outdoor area for entertainment where they could close off the house entirely. This project won an award for merit, by the National Landscape Association.
COUNTRY CLUB VILLAGE*
Ardmore Oklahoma, Ok. Client: Ford, Powell and Carson. Architects and Planners. Description: A single-family Master. Plan of a 20-acre farm. Site amenities include conversion of an existing stock tank into the community's major water feature and passive recreation area. The water feature is connected with other community parks by greenbelts created from pre-development drainage draws.
CROCKETT PARK REHABILITATION*
San Antonio, Texas. Owner/Client: City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. Description: The rehabilitation of Crockett Park began with the Master Plan development. The first phase of the park included the installation of a central gazebo, lighting standards, walks, benches, shade trees and accent trees. A prominent location in the park was chosen to reinstall the original bust of Crockett. Construction cost for Phase 1 was $170,000 and the project was completed in 1997.

The project consists of paving treatments; planting and irrigation, lighting and bridge structure enhancement. Art enhancement is a part of this project.
DALLAS ARBORETUM ENTRANCE PLAZA*
This project was the re-development of an entry plaza. The scope of work included design elements for the development of vehicular/pedestrian circulation and paving, entry booth, water feature, security fencing and walls, trellises, information kiosks, landscape planting and irrigation. Construction drawings were developed for all these items. Construction costs were estimated at $500,000. Construction was completed in 1989. Involvement in these projects included all phases of project management: Client contact, cost estimating, construction drawing development, bid negotiations and construction administration.
DAVIS RESIDENCE
San Antonio, TX. The Client's love of gardening was what drove the project's landscape concept. The client requested the accommodation of a small herb, rose, perennial, and shade garden as well as lush plantings around the swimming pool that would eventually provide some screening for privacy, not afforded by the small lots. The herb garden is located at the end of the drive at the entrance to the backyard in a raised stone planter that can be viewed from the breakfast room and kitchen windows. The rose garden was placed on the west side of the pool. The perennial garden is located in a sunny part of the backyard also placed in a raised stone planter with a granite gravel path for easy access. A lacey oak placed in the far corner will provide screening without overwhelming the yard. The far side of the pool was planted with palms Mountain Laurels Coppertone loquats and various small flowering plants. The shade garden is located adjacent to the house under large post oaks. The overall effect as it grows in is of a lush varied backdrop even though confined to small pockets of planting.
DECO DISTRICT LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS
San Antonio, TX. Description: Developed the landscape planting plan, hardscape plan and coordinated lighting for streetscape project at the direction of the prime consultant. The plan consisted placement of Date Palms, Florida Sabol Palms and various other native or well adapted plant materials. The locations of these palms pose a challenge and will be carefully selected to avoid utilities, possible conflicts with site lines and limited right of ways. They will be placed in planters that ranged from open and raised, in islands between parking to cut outs that will be covered in pavers.
DOMINION COTTAGE ESTATES PLANNED UNIT DEVELOPMENT*
Client: Walter K. Myers Companies. Description: This development project included Landscape Design Planning and Engineering services for 63 acre wooded site. Our office was responsible for redevelopment of the site plan including analysis and design modifications due to significant trees and topographic conditions, which changed interior roadway alignment, required drainage modifications and realignment of utilities. The project included design and design development and construction documents for planting plans utilizing drought tolerant native and introduced plant species for the green belts, the parkway repeat with berms along Dominion Building and the public easements for 200 residences, major focal points such as: a 1.6 acre water feature with waterfalls, boulder embankments, entry gates, entry signs, mail-pick-up monuments and vehicular bridge. Also provided for were golf cart and pedestrian paths, clay pavers at intersections, tree lighting, vintage lighting and street signage. FFW completed the project on time and within budget.

Project Description: Landscape development consisted of the use of native and naturalized plant material and automatic irrigation in compliance with Xeriscape guidelines to meet Landscape Ordinances. Plantings consisted of mainly shade trees, shrubs, perennials and drought tolerant grasses.
EDA STREETSCAPE*
San Antonio, TX. Description: The project consists of rehabilitating East Commerce and Street sidewalks within the Sunset Station (St. Paul Square) area and extending sidewalks to the eastside of Downtown San Antonio. Scope of work includes re-use of the Square's original brick pavers, sidewalk widening, upgrading existing site conditions to current handicap accessibility standards, and street tree planting.
EDGEWOOD FINE ARTS LEARNING ACADEMY
Edgewood Independent School District. San Antonio, Texas. This project was designed with the use of native and naturalized plant material supported by an automatic irrigation in compliance with Xeriscape guidelines. Plantings consisted of mainly shade trees, accent trees, planting beds and drought tolerant grasses. Design services also included assisting with the design of the outdoor courtyard and open spaces created to compliment programs to occur within the facilities.
FORT SAM HOUSTON COMMUNITY SPORTS AND RECREATION PARK*
Fort Sam Houston, TX. Strategic masterplan identifying the existing and future recreational needs for Fort Sam Houston. The scope of services included: site analysis, preparation of architectural/landscape architectural guidelines, site lighting standards, utility requirements, rehabilitation requirements for existing buildings, development phasing and cost estimates.
FRANK TEJEDA ESTATES EAST/WEST
Lackland Air Force Base. The project is located at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. This project consisted of the landscape design of the 84 acres residential area of the Air Force Base. The landscape design included the planting of over 450 trees and accent trees, entry development and planting design for the leasing office. The tree design included spatial and seasonal variety design along a walking path and new berms. The project was completed in 2001.
GENERAL HUDNELL DR. TO BILLY MITCHELL RD. ROADWAY ENHANCEMENTS. Kelly USA (Formerly Kelly Air Force Base). This project is at Kelly USA formerly Kelly AFB, San Antonio, Texas and is administered by the Greater Kelly Development Authority. The project consists of the Landscape Master Plan for General Hudnell from Highway 90 to its terminus. The first phase of implementation is funded by the client, TXDOT and the City of San Antonio for General Hudnell from General Hudnell to Billy Mitchell. Funds provided can be used for barrier and paving treatments; planting and irrigation, lighting and bridge structure enhancement. Art enhancement is a part of this project.
GENERAL HUDNELL
San Antonio, TX. Description: provided landscape architectural conceptual design for General Hudnell and will provide Landscape architectural design drawings for the reach of General Hudnell from Cupples Bridge to Billy Mitchell.
GRISSOM ROAD STORAGE
This project was a 35 acre multi-use development which included commercial, retail, a convenient store, outdoor storage facility, parkland and detention ponds. The scope included: preparing a woodland delineation plan, and master plan development. The project is currently under permitting with construction starting in 2007.
HARRIS CORPORATION
The project consisted of providing for preservation and protection of many existing trees that the Architects plans accommodated as well as the design of planting. Irrigation and some hardscape elements for a 29-acre corporate campus. The planting plans were designed for the two entrances, parking lot, edge of the flood plain between the parking lot and creek, along the foundation and the large employee courtyard. A drainage swale took the form of a dry creek bed with large limestone boulders as the focal for the employee's courtyard area.
H.B. ZACHRY CORPORATE HEADQUATERS*
San Antonio, Texas. As the director of landscape architecture for the firm of Ford, Powell & Carson, Inc., Cullen Coltrane assisted an associated architectural firm in site planning the H.B. Zachry Corporation Headquarter's campus expansion in San Antonio, Texas. The project included master planning and implementation of infrastructure expansion, support parking and park development. Park amenities included a lake, jogging trail, pedestrian bridges, and reforestation and wildflower meadow development. The lake serves as the focal point for the park's passive recreation and functions as the water source for site irrigation. The jogging path is a six-foot wide asphalt trail and is approximately a quarter mile long. It offers a variety of visual experiences by meandering through shade trees, over water features, and through wildflower meadows. Serving as the path's trailhead, a vine-covered trellis gathering space is nestled in a Texas Hill Country landscape, complete with a rock outcropping waterfall and creek as its focal point. The Texas Hill Country landscape concept expands beyond the park, complimenting the new building's South Texas architectural vernacular. The landscaping features the use of native and drought tolerant shade trees, ornamental trees, shrubs, groundcovers and wildflowers.
HORTON PROPERTIES LAND USE STUDY*
Huntsville, Alabama. This project was a 1272 -acre multi-use development Land-Use Study that included location of commercial, retail, residential parcels and a Golf Course. The scope of the project was to assist the client in studying land uses and zoning issues prior being annexed into the City of Huntsville Alabama.
INDEPENDENCE HILL ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY
San Antonio, Texas. The project was developed in the Texas Hill country area of San Antonio. Design responsibilities included the development of landscape and irrigation drawings and interior plantings for indoor courtyards. Existing trees and understory trees were protected to keep the ambience of the Hill country. Plantings were used to aid the re-establishment of slopes due to high-grade changes. Native xeriscape type plantings were used on site to provide low maintenance and yearly color changes. The interior planting atriums were developed to provide variety within the buildings and to create gathering areas. Other interior features include fountains, bridges and trellises. Scope of work included construction administration for adherence of installation to construction drawings.
JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMPUS*
San Antonio, Texas. Cullen Coltrane assisted an associated architectural firm in master planning and implementing a 28-acre campus for the San Antonio Jewish community. The project consists of a 120,000 square foot multi-use building. Uses include office space, an elementary school, childcare facility, senior citizen center, mental health services, health club, library, and a holocaust museum. Outdoor recreational amenities include seven tennis courts, three playgrounds, combination softball and soccer field, two swimming pools and a network of nature trails. Sitting of the program elements without stripping the natural topography and landscape were the primary site issues. Minimal tree and understory planting removal utilized the native vegetation to blend the facility into is surroundings. Minimal tree removal also reduced installation of new landscaping, providing an existing low maintenance landscape approach that reduced landscape and site irrigation costs.
JOHN JAMES PARK IMROVEMENT PROJECTS*
San Antonio, TX. John James Park is a park originally developed 20 years ago. The focus of the improvement project was to create a more recreational valuable facility. The improvements included the installation of a playground, ADA accessible picnic units, and ADA accessible portable restrooms, 2,580 lineal feet of walking/jogging trail, site lighting, soccer field lighting, and expansion of the existing parking lot. Project construction costs were $440,000. The project was completed in 2000.
LAKELINE DEVELOPMENT*
This master plan was created as a marketing tool to illustrate development potential of a tract of land based its zoning at the time. Land uses included high density residential, commercial, office, retail, a regional shopping center, and transit facilities. Major landforms were identified and converted into detention ponds, hike and bike trails, and other site amenities.
LAKSIDE PARK IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT
San Antonio, TX. Lakeside Park is a new 30 acre park located in southeast City of San Antonio. The site is situated along Rosillo Creek and features an approximately 10 acre pond. Landscape Architectural services for the park included site planning, landscape architecture design and irrigation improvements. Construction improvements consisted of a new paved vehicular access, new parking, site lighting, drinking fountain and 3,240 lineal feet of walking/jogging trail. The installation of the trail also included the renovation of an existing pedestrian bridge and the construction of two additional bridges to accommodate City Park maintenance vehicles. Construction has been completed.
LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE - LANDSCAPE GUIDELINES DEVELOPMENT. Kelly USA (Formerly Kelly Air Force Base). This project is at Kelly USA formerly Kelly AFB, San Antonio, Texas and is administered by the Greater Kelly Development Authority. CFZ is part of a team, consisting of landscape architects from various project teams and are currently working on the landscape treatment guidelines for the entire development. Art enhancement is a part of this project.
LOBOS RESIDENCE*
Monterrey, Mexico. Landscape architects completed master planning for this 64 acre private estate surrounding a 23,500 square foot residence, swimming pool & 3,000 square foot gazebo, perched on a mountainside overlooking the city of Monterrey, Mexico. Scope of work consisted of conceptual design for all hardscape and softscape elements. Hardscape included design of entry court with parking for ten vehicles, motor court at two three-vehicle garages, front and rear garden walkways, service access to rear garden for catering vehicles, aesthetic & erosion control retaining walls, children's playground, Multi use Court & Soccer Play area, 120' long water display in the rear garden and 60' tall waterfall at the entry court. Native stone materials were used for pedestrian & vehicular paving, aesthetic retaining walls, and water features. Softscape included design of lawn areas, plant beds, location of major and minor trees to take best advantage of spectacular views, and re-vegetation of excavated hillside. A palette of plant materials appropriate for the region was compiled.

Plantings consisted of mainly shade trees, shrubs, perennials and drought tolerant grasses.
McALLISTER PARK RENOVATION
Location: San Antonio, TX. Client: San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. Description: McAllister is one of the city of San Antonio's largest parks, designated as a large urban park and features many active and passive recreational uses. There are two distinct areas one that is more natural in character and offers mostly passive recreational uses and an area that offers more active recreational uses with some overlap. The team chose to designate these areas as Natural zone & Sports Zone in hopes of developing or discouraging future development in those areas accordingly. The team's task was to evaluate needs established by the community input meetings organized by the City of San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department Staff and to recommend improvements to the park funded by the City of San Antonio's Quality of life Bond Funds and then to implement those improvements. The recommended improvements include development of a New Park entry serving the Sports zone or active recreation area, reconstructing the old main entrance and reducing vehicular traffic in the Natural Zone by realigning roads. Other improvements include street lighting for new park entry, traffic bumps to slow traffic, restrooms with water fountain and Lighting in Sports zone, new pedestrian access at trail by police sub station, repair of some parts of existing trails and a new cross Country Trail from Buckhorn Rd. to Thousand Oaks.
MaCARTHUR HIGH SCHOOL REPLACEMENT
San Antonio, Texas. North East Independent School District Project Construction Professional Services Provided: Landscape Architecture Project Description: The project encompassed the complete replacement of the existing high school in multiple phases and was maintained in operation during the school year. Responsibilities included an inventory of the condition and treatment of the 224 existing trees of the campus, relocation of 7 trees up to 15" caliper and site landscaping. Approximately 5 acres of automatic irrigation and 4 acres of manual irrigation were installed. This included campus irrigation as well as football, baseball and soccer fields. Landscape design included low maintenance xeriscape principles and meeting City of San Antonio Landscape Ordinances.
MARINE CREEK TECHNOLOGY PARK*
Austin, Texas. The Master Plan was developed to conceptualize a multi-use Technology Park. Uses included corporate campuses, retail developments, multifamily and a regional transit facility. The project also included development of landscape guidelines planted boulevards and trails, lake and stream features.
MICHAEL'S PARK*
San Antonio, Texas. Michaels' Park is a 3-acre liner park within the Jewish Community Center Campus located in San Antonio, Texas. It provides recreational uses for all ages by offering a variety of amenities. The park's trailhead provides multi-use, stone paved open space with moveable tables and chairs. This space offers a viewing area for parents to sit and watch their children swim in the adjacent swimming pool and provides an opportunity for the elderly to enjoy tabletop games. It also converts into an unobstructed open space by removing the tables, offering a pedestrian node for cultural events or display areas for the Campus' nearby childcare facility and elementary school. The trailhead then converges into a six-foot wide trail, following the existing terrain into a native tree covered forest. Amongst the forest, a vine-covered trellis anchors a stone paved amphitheater and provides another gathering space. The trail continues to meander through the forest and terminates at a reflection pond. A small waterfall accents the pond providing a tranquil sound of falling water and buffering the nearby activities of the tennis courts and the pool.
MONROE S. MAY, JR. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. VIRGINIA A. MYERS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. HENRY STEUBING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
San Antonio, Texas. Northside Independent School District. Project Completion Date: 1997 Professional Services Provided: Landscape Architecture Project Description: Landscape development consisted of the use of native and naturalized plant material and automatic irrigation in compliance with Xeriscape guidelines. Plantings consisted of mainly shade trees, accent trees and drought tolerant grasses. Grossman Cancer Therapy & Research Center Building Expansion and Parking Garage. San Antonio, Texas. The project consisted of the expansion of the existing CTRC facility with a new office building tower and parking garage. Design responsibilities included the completion and renovation of the existing irrigation system and landscape design. The new landscape installed consisted of shade trees and shrubbery at the parking garage and entry planting at the lower building entry. Scope of work included construction administration for adherence of installation to construction drawings.
NEEL RESIDENCE
Laredo, TX. The Client's love of the Texas Hill Country is the inspiration for this project's landscape concept. The backyard replicates springs commonly found in the Hill Country, providing the water source for a waterfall, which terminates in a reflection pond (pool). The random stone paving pattern and limestone boulder placement accents the informality of the backyard and provides planting pockets for perennials, groundcovers and shrubs. Strategically placed red oak, redbuds and mountain laurels softens the edges of the small backyard, creates a sense of space and stimulates the senses with seasonal color and fragrance. Other backyard amenities include: a spa, grotto under the waterfall, bench seating around the pool edges, sunbathing / entertaining areas, and a small woodland garden off the master bedroom. Activities can also extend into the evening hours with low voltage site lighting. The frontyard continues the landscape concept with the continual use of native plants. However plants are arranged in a more formal fashion and located around a low landscape limestone wall, which accents the residence's strong architectural entry.
NORTHEAST BAPTIST HOSPITAL MEDICAL OFFIC BUILDING & PARKING GARAGE*
San Antonio, Texas. The project consisted the development of a new medical office building and parking facility. Design responsibilities included development of the landscape and irrigation drawings to meet the City of San Antonio Landscape Ordinance. Existing trees that were removed were mitigated to meet ordinance requirements. Design of the landscape was focused to the use of native and evergreen shrubs and groundcover. Perennials and annual were used to provide yearly color. Scope of work included construction administration for adherence of installation to construction drawings.
NORTHEAST I.S.D. FOOTBALL FIELD IMPROVEMENTS
San Antonio, Texas. Owner: North East Independent School District. Project Construction Cost: Approximately $130,000 (landscape and irrigation only). Project Completion Date: 2003. Professional Services Provided: Landscape Architecture. Project Description: Project encompassed the development of new running tracks and re-development of existing football fields for four middle schools. The schools were Jackson MS, Kruegar MS, White MS and Nimitz MS. Design responsibilities included detailing of new football field soils and solid sod, design of new automatic irrigation systems and development of year long maintenance specifications. Proper soils, depths and compaction levels were specified for sports turf development. Solid sod, Bermuda 419, was specified in rolls with maximum grade tolerances and maximum roll spacing tolerances identified. Fully automatic and independent irrigation rotary system with weather sensors was designed for each school. Project responsibilities included bid negotiations and construction administration. Work was completed by March 2003.
NORTHCOTE*
Huntsville, Alabama. This 800 acre tract consists of a 560 acre lowland site and a 240 acre mountain site located in Northwest Huntsville, Alabama. The study consisted of two phases: 1) data collection and analysis and 2) land use plan/master plan development. During the first phase the property was researched and analyzed in terms of demographics, roadway infrastructure, schools, site geography, geology, zoning, utility supply and demand, and drainage. Once the analysis was completed the concept plan embraced a mixture of up-scale residential, multifamily, office, retail and recreational facilities within a traditional town format. The town of Northcote is distinguished by its decreased dependency on automobiles and an increase emphasis on a pedestrian life style, fostering a sense of community.
OBLATE MINISTRY TO MINISTERS RETREAT CENTER
The client was Sprinkle-Robey Architects. CFZ Scope of work included extensive landscape planting and irrigation design for four different areas on the campus of the Oblate School of Theology. One of our main goals was to use as many native drought tolerant and exotic species on this project as we could. The Ministry to Ministers building on the campus consisted of soft curving foundation plantings in keeping with other existing plantings. Small flowering tree, shrubs, and ground cover beds we designed in the courtyard areas to support buildings and hardscape designed by the Architects.
OLMOS BASIN PARK REHABILITATION AND TRAIL DEVELOPMENT
San Antonio, Texas. Retained by Ford, Powell & Carson, Inc. started in June of 2003, C.F. Z Group assisted in the planning efforts and managed a team of engineers, architects, and other landscape architects to analyze and develop working drawings for existing recreational facilities such as roads, parking lots, picnic areas, playground and restrooms requiring rehabilitation. Also to direct planning and development efforts for a multi-use trail system to connect recreational facilities within the park, surrounding neighborhoods and to a regional park north of the Basin.
PORT ARTHUR BOARDWALK
Port Arthur, TX. In conjunction with LaBiche Architectural Group a local Beaumont architect, Cullen Coltrane developed a boardwalk master plan and completed the first phase of the project for the City of Port Arthur. The master plan established the boardwalk as a catalyst for future downtown economic growth along the banks of the Sabine-Neches River. The plan also connected the boardwalk with the recreational activities of Pleasure Island and downtown Port Arthur. The project included retail space
and restaurants, support parking, pedestrian linkage to downtown landmarks, a ferry landing, and landscape enhancements. First phase construction as shown above, included the completion of the initial 260 lf of boardwalk, installed infrastructure for future expansion, coordinated initial building along the boardwalk, and provided landscape
architecture and irrigation services.
RAMSEY FAMILY RANCH
Blanco, TX. The Ramsey Residence is a 500 acre ranch. Services include Site Planning of the new house structure, layout of ranch roads and parking, conceptual grading plan, site amenities including a natural bluff overlook, existing water fall, two fire pits, outdoor cooking and entertainment pavilion. Concepts were designed to include swimming access to the river, site lighting scheme, and site paving selection and layout, irrigation and erosion control design.
RANDOLPH, BUILDING 900
Randolph Air Force Base. This project is located at Randolph AFB, San Antonio, Texas. The project included the redevelopment of the landscape planting and irrigation at Building 900. The landscape planting was identified and approved by RAFB personnel. The cost of the project was $106,000 and was completed in 2003.
SAN ANTONIO BOTANICAL GARDENS' ADA IMPROVEMENTS*
San Antonio, Texas. This project encompassed the inventory and analysis of the entire garden area pathways for ADA acceptability and safety. The first Phase of the project included the renovation of the main curved entry to the Sullivan Carriage House from the parking lot, installation of a new ADA path to the Auld
House and renovation of the path for accessibility to the restrooms at the outdoor
classroom. Building improvements included the renovation and upgrade of the HVAC system for the Sullivan Carriage House. The construction budget for the project was $280,000 and was completed in 2002.
SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR HIGH SCHOOL
Northside Independent School District This is the first major high school in Helotes, Texas. The school, sited on 80 acres, was designed around the theme of a “village square” and “village green.” Scope of work included the development of the courtyard-paving pattern while preserving existing trees, landscape design and the extensive irrigation system. Elements of the campus development include classrooms, auditorium, cafeteria, animal husbandry, and sports facilities. Construction drawings were developed to include hardscape layout and details, landscape planting plans and irrigation plans for the full campus.
SAN ANTONIO RIVER "MUSEUM REACH"
Improvements Project. Contact: Steve Ramsey - San Antonio River Authority. As the past director of landscape architecture and lead landscape architect for the firm of Ford, Powell & Carson, Inc., Cullen Coltrane assisted in developing the preliminary design report for the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River. The report defined the character and location of numerous public spaces, pedestrian pathways, site lighting and landscaping. The project also proposed extending river barge traffic north of downtown by raising the water level with an introduction of a lock and dam structure. Thus, promoting river access to property and providing opportunities for future mix-use development along the banks of the San Antonio River. The San Antonio River project, originally created in 1971 as a flood control and beautification project under the direction of the Fort Worth District, Corps of Engineers, was in need of major restoration and improvements. To accomplish this monumental task, the San Antonio River Authority retained a number of design professionals to redevelop the famed river channel along with adjoining spaces and walkways, and divided the project work into various sections. Coltrane Fernandez Zavala Group, LLC, assisted in developing the preliminary design report for the Museum Reach section of the San Antonio River as the landscape architects with Prime Architect, Ford, Powell & Carson Architects. The report defined the character and location of numerous public spaces, pedestrian pathways, site lighting and landscaping along this portion of the San Antonio River. The project also proposed extending river barge traffic north of downtown by raising the water level with an introduction of a lock and dam structure. Thus, promoting river access to property and providing opportunities for future mix-use development along the banks of the San Antonio River. Project fee $1.5 Million.
SAN PEDRO CREEK CHANNEL PROJECT
Client: San Antonio River Authority. Contract: Steve Ramsey, Chief Engineer. Description: Preparation of overall master plan of betterments along San Pedro Creek channel and parkways along Laredo, Flores, and Myrtle Streets. Presentation graphics were provided as well as design packages with construction documents and specifications for several phases. Betterments included; walkways, lighting, plantings and a softer more curved approach for the new channel. Boulders were used to armor the channel as an alternative to stone veneered concrete walls, for the majority of the channel. The walls at the inlet and outlet structures were lined with existing limestone and granite from old channel walls on the site that could not be preserved and that dated from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. The project has provided an opportunity for pedestrian linkages along the creek through neighborhoods, commercial and retail businesses, a junior college, and a historic landmark park. Project also involves presentation of design package to San Antonio River Authority and associated Review Boards and Agencies.
SOUTHSIDE LIONS SKATE PARK MASTER PLAN
San Antonio, TX. Client: San Antonio Parks & Recreation. Description: The purpose of this master plan is to provide the CSA Parks and Recreation Department with a comprehensive plan to develop a new Skate Facility and associated recreational opportunities for Southside Lions Park (SLP). The Parks and Recreation Department will use this plan to determine future development and funding options. The primary goal of this effort was to evaluate the existing site resources and adapt the tennis complex into a skate park. Secondary objectives included assessing associated recreational opportunities, aesthetics, and operational impacts.
ST. MATTHEWS CATHOLIC CHURCH RECREATIONAL PARK
San Antonio, TX. Client: St Matthews Catholic Church. Description: Master Plan and implementation of a 15-Acre park to the meet the Parish's recreational needs and the desire to create outdoor devotional areas. Although privately owned, the Park serves as a community park and encourages adjacent neighborhoods to use its facilities. Master plan amenities include: an outdoor worship area, Stations of the Cross, walking trails, playground, basketball court, sand volleyball court, softball/ baseball fields, batting cages, Multi-use baseball/soccer field, storage/restrooms/ concession building. Unique design features include the restoration of an on-site Cortez concrete bridge, which is incorporated into the walking trail system, and site walls and the outdoor seating area constructed of stone quarried on-site.
SYMPHONY LANE*
The landscape architects assisted the Brown & Root team in developing Landscape schemes for each of the engineered solutions that reflect the special natural, historical and cultural character of the area. Landscape architects developed planting schemes to restore native riparian vegetation. This native re-vegetation aided water quality and bank stabilization, restored wildlife habitat, and minimized future maintenance. The "soft edged" designs enhanced natural areas and maintained the rural or pastoral setting of this reach and the character of the Symphony Lane meander. The landscape architects provided plans, graphic renderings and elevations for presentations, utilizing 3D and electronic drawings when appropriate for public meetings.
TAJ MAHAL, BUILDING 100 and MAIN ENTRY RE-DEVELOPMENT.
Randolph Air Force Base. This project is located at Randolph AFB, San Antonio, Texas. The project included the removal and replacement of existing plant material at the Taj Mahal, Building 100. Due to new security issues, new low landscape shrubs and groundcovers were installed at the Taj Mahal and the west side of the main ntry. The irrigation was also renovated to accommodate the changes. The cost the project is approximately $127,225 and was completed early 2004.
TEZEL ROAD LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS
San Antonio, TX. Description: Developed the Landscape Planting Plans and coordinated irrigation for this street project. Tezel Road from Timber Path to Old Tezel was to be rerouted, thus requiring demolition of the old road footprint. This area was the focus of the landscape project and native drought tolerant plants were utilized thru out. The intent of the plan was to use plant materials that might have been indigenous to the area.
UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH
San Antonio, Texas. The project consisted of the development of a new medical complex within an existing campus with existing buildings. Design responsibilities included the development of landscape and irrigation drawings. Existing mature trees were relocated on site. A special community garden was developed with the emphasis of proper vegetables and herbs that combat diabetes. Emphasis on campus plantings focused on native xeriscape type plantings. Scope of work included construction administration for adherence of installation to construction drawings.
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SAN ANTONIO “DOWNTOWN” CAMPUS*
Durango Building and Parking Garage, San Antonio, Texas. As the Director of Landscape Architecture with the firm of Ford, Powell & Carson, Inc. Mr. Coltrane Assisted in campus enhancements for the campus. Enhancements included construction of a new academic building, a quadrangle and parking garage. The scope of services included hardscape development, landscape planting and irrigation design. Development highlights included foundation plantings to support the building' hardscape, a centralized brick paved quadrangle for outdoor gatherings surrounded by red oaks and drystack limestone walls and landscaping of flowering trees and ground covers to blend the parking garage with the surrounding infrastructure.
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, WOMEN'S SOFTBALL FIELD
Austin, Texas. Client: Marmon Mok. The development of the NCAA intercollegiate women's sports facility was completed in two phases. Phase One consisted of the installation of the site utilities, the irrigation system for the field, the subsurface drainage system and infield and outfield soil mixes. The sports field turf was installed as a separate contract to secure its readiness for the Fall 1997 season. The turf installed was rolls of Bermuda Tifway 419. Phase two consisted of the development of the remainder of the site and the facility including the construction of the 1500 seat stadium. Design responsibility included irrigation, landscape and entrance hardscape development. The hardscape development included planters, retaining walls, stair entries, ramps, and handrails.
WALKER COUNTY REGIONAL SPORTS AND RECREATION PARK*
Walker County, AL. Client: Goodrum Knowles Architect. Description: Conversion of an abandon county airport into a regional recreation park. The park consists of a natatorium, individual softball, baseball and little league complexes, soccer fields, tennis court complex, passive and active open spaces, scale model airfield, propose lake for fishing, swimming and boating, trails, campgrounds and support parking.

Woodlands, TX. Scope of services included landscaping, irrigation and hardscape construction administration. Responsibility included: submittal reviews, on-site problem solving, and value engineering.
XERISCAPE DEMONSTRATION GARDEN
Location: San Antonio, Texas. Owner/Client: San Antonio Botanical Gardens, Paul Cox, Asst. Director. Nature of Firm's Contract: Prime Consultant. Project Construction Cost: Phase 1- $83,700, Total Project $237,000. Project Manager: Leticia Zavala. Project Description: Develop two Xeriscape demonstration gardens. First garden site is northwest of the Carriage House entrance. Adapted plant materials are to be utilized to create an attractive as well as functional garden complimenting the existing landscapes. This site is to be available to the public during facility off hours. The garden will contain a meandering pervious pathway and seating areas. Appropriate signage is to identify and explain the plant material. The second garden is more extensive demonstration area located above the Conservatory complex. The objective of this garden is to be more instructional and provide examples of various Xeriscaping techniques, plant material, irrigation methods, mulches, walkway surfaces and bed borders. Pathways at both garden areas are to be ADA accessible. Signage is to be incorporated to explain techniques, methods, materials and concepts. The first phase soon to be under construction will address the hardscape within this garden.
